What is Stoicism?
Stoicism is a philosophical school which is hard to explain in just a couple of sentences, as it encompasses a comprehensive and coherent system of ethics, logic, and metaphysics (no need to know what these words mean for now).
Stoicism was founded in Greece around 300 BC by Zeno of Citium and has a rich history, influencing many important subsequent philosophical schools and figures.
Stoicism teaches that the standard of human happiness is not the pursuit of hedonistic pleasure, but moral virtue, and that we should be emotionally indifferent to anything outside the realm of moral virtue.
Since your behavior is something you can control—such as living virtuously— that is what we should focus on to live a meaningful, fulfilling life, rather than on things we have no control over.
Another key element of the Stoic framework that ties together many aspects is the principle that we are most fulfilled when we live "in accordance with human nature." This principle is rooted in the idea that humans thrive the most when we all work together with one another, as the highly social animals that we are, this is our nature and our path to a truly meaningful life.
How you would look back at your life on your deathbed; would you think back at that expensive car you bought and how much you enjoyed it, or would you ponder about those times where you could be there for someone during dire times, about how proud you were for being a good parent, spouse or friend?
Do I need to be familiar with Stoicism to join?
No prior knowledge is required. The Stoic Guidance project is designed for both beginners and experienced practitioners. We offer introductory resources that break down the basics of Stoicism, and give the tools to actively practice it fully. Additionally, one of the key aims of the project is to help stoic students and practitioners deepen and embody in their real lives. Stoic Guidance may fit you well if you’re already knowledgeable about Stoicism, but interested in more deeply practicing and living it.
Is philosophy vague and meaningless?
On the contrary, as the Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus said: "Philosophy is nothing else than to search out by reason what is right and proper and by deeds to put it into practice."
As we can see here, philosophy is more than pondering for the sake of pondering; we need to practice it, actively.
How is Stoicism relevant to modern life?
Stoicism is timeless because it deals with universal human experiences like the pursuit of happiness, freedom, uncertainty, adversity, and more.
Can I practice Stoicism alongside other philosophies or practices like mindfulness?
Yes! For example, many people have noted the striking similarities between Stoicism and Buddhism for example. Many mindfulness practices in general can fit perfectly within the Stoic framework.
Many people also find that Stoicism works well in conjunction with therapeutic modalities (such as Internal Family Systems or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) .
Can I decide to stop participating with the project midway?
